In grade 10, students are specifically prepared for the requirements of upper secondary level. This includes the acquisition of comprehensive knowledge and/or appropriate skills for scientific propaedeutic work, which are to be acquired through the preparation and defense of a complex paper (see School Regulations for Secondary Schools Abitur Examination (SOGYA) § 26 (5)). At the JCG, this achievement can be achieved in different ways, which are chosen by the students themselves.

Option 1:

The students write a (classic) scientific paper based on a working hypothesis. They set out the theoretical foundations of the topic and supplement these with a practical section in which they present their own findings in accordance with the working hypothesis. They then defend their work in a colloquium.

Option 2:

Pupils develop a product of their own choice. They document the development process in a learning diary and present the finished product. In the 2024/25 school year, an instruction manual for a telescope from the Görlitz observatory, a flyer on the transition from the regular grammar school to the sports school and the school's own homework booklet MIA were (further) developed.

Option 3:

According to SOGYA § 26 (5), it is also possible for pupils to participate in courses at a university "in coordination with the school". Due to a cooperation with the Department of Computer Science at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, which was launched in the 2024/25 school year, JCG students can take part in an introductory lecture on programming and the associated exercise for one semester. The aim is to acquire basic programming skills and to develop their own game, Minesweeper, at the end.
